Come To My Opening!
Thursday 3 April, 2008

My BOOBS & DINKS: Early Detection Kits are making another appearance-- and the project is growing!

From 3 - 26 April 2008, my Playing Doctor installation at Open Studio (401 Richmond in Toronto) will include the usual suspects-- dozens and dozens of crocheted BOOBS & DINKS lining one wall, the cutout figures that caused a minor ruckus at YorkU, the short PSA style film in which models show you how to perform self-exams of your own precious privates, and crocheted strap-ons for those brave souls who want to dress up and follow along with the video.

NEW in this show is a series of screenprints highlighting moments of surprising tenderness between models as they help each other check for lumps and share the fear of confronting human frailties. I'll post sneek peek images soon on the Art Page.

The show invites pictured above double as cut out dolls. Come to the show, pick one up, and take home a little piece of boobage and dinkery. A delightful addition to any home decor.

The opening party is being held Thursday 3 April 2008 from 7 til 9 PM at Open Studio-- 401 Richmond Street (on the south east corner of Richmond and Spadina). Hope to see you there!

Exciting Updates!
January 2008

Finally-- I have managed to get to some the updates I've been putting off for months...

New stuff on the ART PAGE-- BOOBAGE and DINKERY as well as the pages I drew for Becky Johnson's Comics Stenography book at Trampoline Hall.

MERCH PAGE now active! Visit my Etsy shop-- it's pretty.
(note: to buy and sell stuff on Etsy, you have to be a member-- but it is the least scary kind of membership ever. It doesn't cost you anything, it takes like 30 seconds to join, and then you get to participate in the most amazing international marketplace of handmade and vintage goods online!)

HOW TO PAGE now active too!
This is the page I've been dreaming about updating for ages. There are two articles there for now...an intro to the indie publishing community in Toronto and the tutorial I wrote for No Media Kings about how to set up a screenprinting studio. But more will follow-- bookbinding, gel transfer, and crochet...

CONTACT PAGE updated-- now you can email me from anywhere in the world. It's magic! And you can join my mailing list to receive updates about my work and to hear about upcoming shows.

The above picture was taken at Hotel Canzine 2007 by the lovely and amazing Jasmine Fitzwilliam. Sigh.

Playing Doctor with Shannon Gerard and stef lenk!

Hung no.3; Lonely Tylenol is hot off the press and I'm launching it as part of Pages Books' This Is Not a Reading Series on August 7!

I'm also (at the same event) launching a companion project called BOOBS & DINKS; Early Detection Kits-- a series of crocheted plush breasts and testicles with furious lumps inside them, which you find by following instructions in accompanying booklets. The kits use humour and softness (plush privates!) to encourage regular self-examinations of your own precious bathing suit areas.

At TINARS, my multimedia presentation includes models in crocheted strap-ons who will show you how it's done.

TINARS is a co-launch. My fellow book artist and gal-pal stef lenk launches her brand new book The Haircut on the same night. Check out more information about this event at: shannongerard.org/tinars.htm

Stones & Ghosts: A Call For Submissions
9 April 2007

I've got this little subscription series going. It's called Stones & Ghosts and is loosely organized around the themes of Faith and Wishing. I'm looking for submissions for the May issue.

Do you have thoughts on the subjects of Dreams Come True or Hopes Dashed? Wishes Granted or Wasted? Prayers Answered or Unheard? I would like to hear them.

Tell a story. Share a superstition. Make a wish. Send a prayer. Try defining Faith. Express your existential dismissal of wishing as an exercise in bad faith. Rail at gee-oh-dee. Respond in anyway you like to the themes of Faith and / or Wishing.

You can submit responses by electro or by snail mail:
Faith and Wishing
197 Beverley Street, Unit 1
Toronto ON M5T 1Y9

Please respond by Monday 30 April 2007.
Responses may be edited for length only.
Submissions of less than 50 words will be included as is.
Please indicate whether or not you wish to be credited and, if so, by which moniker you would like to be known.

I will post entries as they come in, so check back here to see what other people dream about, wish for and believe in, or not.

Print copies of the book will be mailed to subscribers in May 2007 and available for the price of postage to anyone who submits a response.

I Heart Book Art
24 September, 2006

Well, it seems like my obsession with loss has in some way become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Maybe you've noticed the old site is gone. This is a long and kind of depressing story involving scamming thieves, the investigative branch of the central government, and my own lesson learned about keeping backup files. I'll spare you.

Over the next couple of months I'll be rebuilding a new site with better features-- Helpful tutorials about non-toxic printmaking, slightly toxic home-studio print projects, and bookmaking ideas. An art blog. Stuffed moustaches. T-shirts and other assorted smaltz. A portfolio of drawings I've done for love and money.

The old staples will also return-- A catalogue of books by me. News about upcoming shows and book related events. Silly pictures!

Thanks for not leaving me. Check back often. Send me a note.

You're neat.

shan.
