The projects below were made with much love (like when you spread peanut butter all the way to the edge of each crust so that every bite sticks to the roof of your mouth).

BOOBS & DINKS Early Detection Kits

The crocheted breasts and penises in my BOOBS & DINKS Early Detection Kits contain small lumps that can be found by following instructions provided in the accompanying booklets. The booklets take you through all the necessary steps for performing monthly self-examinations of your own breasts or testicles. The softness and humour of these BOOBS & DINKS aims to eliminate some of the fear surrounding the monthly self-exam of our own precious privates. Your bathing suit area is precious!

$5 from the sale of each BOOB or DINK is donated to Cottage Dreams, a cancer recovery initiative in Haliburton, Ontario.

BOOBS & DINKS is a multi-dimensional body of work. In addition to the crocheted multiples, BOOBS & DINKS has also manifested as a six minute PSA style film in which models in life-sized crocheted strap-ons demonstrate self examination (premiered in August 2007 as part of This Is Not a Reading Series with Pages Books in Toronto), as an installation at the Art Gallery of York University (September-December 2007), and as a series of crochet parties where people learn to make their own penis finger puppet or boobie tassle. Upcoming in April 2008, a series of screen prints related to BOOBS & DINKS will be shown at the George Gilmour Gallery at Open Studio in Toronto. BOOBS & DINKS has been featured in several blogs and magazines including The National Post, NOW Magazine, Ready Made, The Storque at ETSY, BlogTO, Comics 212, and Excalibur (one of York U's student newspapers). The Early Detection Kit portion of the project is part of the catalogue of multiples at Art Metropole.

Comics Stenography at Trampoline Hall

In October 2007, I was asked to be one comics stenographer among many at Trampoline Hall. A bunch of local artists attended the lecture series, took notes and made sketches, then went home and drew comics about the event. Becky Johnson of Sweetie Pie Press bound them all into a book. I was thrilled to be part of the experiment. Here's my chapter:

Cinderella Jigsaw Puppets
Jen Bulthuis and the amazing FIDOODLE (toys for little dreamers and a happier planet)

I am mostly a loner. I like to be inside more than I like to be outside. I like to read books in rain streaked windows. But I have managed to nurture a few important friendships in my life and Jen Bulthuis is one. She runs the amazing toy company Fidoodle. She makes these incredible jigsaw puzzles that transform into rod puppets. Each character has a removable head, so kids can interchange them on different bodies and make up their own characters, tell their own stories and use their almightly imaginations. The characters are also fridge magnets. And each puzzle has a retold tale on the back which I was fortunate enough to write. The puzzle below tells the Cinderella story. Icarus coming soon. For more details visit Fidoodle online. All images courtesy of Jen Bulthuis.
